Remember this? Michael J Fox as Marty Mc Fly riding his hoverboard in Back To The Future, if you don’t check the clip below:

Now meet Nils Guadagnin, a young french artist who made a “real” hoverboard.

“The Hoverboard is a project born in 2008 for an exhibition named “Back To the future”. This work is a copy of the hoverboard from the movie Back to the Future II. Integrated into the board and the plinth is an electromagnetic system which levitates the board. A laser system stabilises the object in the air.”

In the making of this work, I was thinking about different ways of presenting sculpture. In fact it’s a reflexion on the multiple possibilities of how to give a sculpture full spatial autonomy.

On a side note: the kicks he was wearing in the flick had sneakerheads gasping for air (pun intended) and a year or two ago there was a petition doing the rounds to have Nike release the Nike Air Mc Fly in 2015. The Hyperdunk was a feeble attempt that missed all kinds of spots and I haven’t heard any news about the sneaker ever seeing the light of day. The petition is gone but I’ve got my fingers crossed!
