Turmkunst 2010 Berlin

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

1 tower, 4 artists and multiple gallons of paint… Since april 1st Flying Förtress, KR, SozyOne and Honet have been painting a Berlin tower, known to locals as the Bierpinsel. Flying Förtress started first with Honet stepping up next and SozyOne to finish the larger than life mural, while Craig “KR” Costello will krink the grey stem. If you’re in the neighbourhood, you know what to do!

For me, one of the tunes of 2010 so far is without a doubt the Floating Points remix of Four Tet’s “Sing”. The original can be found on Four Tet’s no less than sublime There Is Love In You LP but to miss out on the aforementioned remix would be a shame so I suggest you hunt that one down as well.
Floating Points a.k.a. Sam Shepherds is one of the new breed of producers who constantly blur the lines between different genres. This young Mancunian started playing the piano at age 9 and got his hands on a pair of turntables when he was 15. The rest as they say is history and nowadays he’s been making heads turn with a plethora of releases such as the Vacuum Ep on his and Alex Nut’s Eglo Records featuring the seminal “Truly” tune (featured below).  I also added another noteworthy remix for Bonobo which I think is sheer bliss! Anyway, I’ll let the music do the talking:

Boredom makes you do crazy things

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

It sure does! It’s also a prerequisite facilitator for great art. I don’t know if boredom was what caused the piece above but I do know that it struck a chord with me. Great work from Adele Renault whose portfolio you can check here! Would look great on a tee as well!
I was also particularly fond of the Tempus Fugit (Time Flies) book she made from flyers she’s been collecting. I have a collection of flyers myself that goes back 20 years hidden in shoeboxes in my basement. They used to adorn the walls (all four!) of my old bedroom but ever since moving out of my parent’s place they’ve been sitting there unused and literally thousands of flyers have been added since. This project made me think of ways to put all those little slices of nostalgia to good use… sounds like a summer project!

Today was the day I had been looking forward to all week: a/ because it was saturday obviously and b/ because Niels “Shoe” Meulman was at the Mac Fly store in Gent signing his Calligraffiti book. Weather was great so took to town with the fam for ice cream and new kicks (for Uma, not me, proof below) Passed by the Mac Fly shop to pick up my signed copy, had a chat with the master and returned home satisfied… Today was a good day! Big up Dynoo Mac Fly and Alex On Point for organizing the event and Shoe for doing this:

Non-Format are Kjell Ekhorn (Norwegian) and Jon Forss (British). Two creatives who are responsible for some of the best graphic design and illustration I’ve seen… ever! Clients include Warp, !K7, Nike, The Wire Magazine and countless others. Die Gestalten published a book featuring their work in 2007 which you should get (just like almost every single Gestalten publication by the way!). Pictured below is the Red Snapper record sleeve they did way back in 2003.

The XX – Islands official video

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The XX was one of my favorite bands of 2009 (well, it seems like they were everyone’s favorite band last year) and they just released the official video to their song Islands. Numerous remixes of their tunes have surfaced, but for me the Nosaj Thing remix of Islands still takes the cake, if you haven’t heard it check the vid below.

R.I.P. Guru

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Just learned that one of my all-time favorite rappers passed away. Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal lost the final battle to cancer… His work with Gangstarr, Jazzmatazz… was the stuff legends are made of.
Always loved his voice, delivery, presence, subject matter… man was an emcee in the truest sense of the word. Baldhead Slick will be sorely missed.
Check YoRaps to read his goodbye note. Don’t know what to make of this, rumour has it Solar wrote this…  whatever, this is not the time for BS, I’ll remember him for his music. You know it’s lonely at the top…

Rest In Peace
